A 67 year old Sabine County man was found dead early Saturday morning on the banks of Patroon Bayou after being reported missing by his wife.
John Huggins, a resident of the Shamrock Shores subdivision in northeast Sabine County, had gone out in his boat Friday afternoon to build crappie blinds, according to Sabine County Sheriff’s Deputy David West.
An avid fisherman and hunter, it was not unusual for Huggins to be out late, but he normally returned home.
Huggins wife phoned Holly Park Marina early Saturday morning inquiring if they had seen him. Glen McDaniel of the marina phoned the Sabine County Sheriff’s Department and advised them of the situation.
Game Wardens Randy Button and Henry Alvarado along with Deputy West began to search for Huggins at daybreak.
His body was found approximately three miles north of Reeves Road Bridge along the bank of Patroon Bayou.
Preliminary reports indicate Huggins was sawing a tree, apparently to be used for a crappie blind, when the tree snapped, kicked back, struck Huggins in the back of the head, and knocked him into the water.
Evidence suggests he was able to climb out of the water and onto the felled tree where he was found at approximately 6:30AM Saturday. His boat was tied up to the bank near the site.
West estimated the slope on the steep bank was near 35% and possibly contributed to the accident.
A memorial service will be held at Holly Park Marina at 10:00AM Monday in the Recreation Center.
Arrangements are pending for interment in Mansfield Texas. |
