The weekend of January 23 -24, eleven students from West Sabine High School attended the Camp for Champs retreat at Piney Woods Baptist Encampment in Corrigan.  Student participants were Brittany Oliver, Jessica Horton, Taylor Farrell, Alisha York, Tiffany Ebarb, Tami Shipe, Cody Speight, Jonathan Verdin, Joshua Alvarado, Bradey Duffy and Kevin Gibson.  Jason Perry and Bridget Trawhon attended as chaperones.

The dynamic motivational speaker Aric Bostick from San Antonio inspired this group of GEAR UP students.  He taught them how to help others individually as well as in a group.  In addition, students engaged in activities that demonstrated teamwork and the positive treatment of others.  Aric taught the students how to prevent “cliques” at school and to make others feel welcome.  He stressed the importance of setting goals for the future and taking steps to reach them.  All of the students participated in a Talent Show on Saturday night.  Other GEAR UP schools that attended Camp for Champs were Central, Hudson, Woodville and Diboll.

When asked what he learned from the experience, Kevin Gipson said, “We need to make a commitment to change and not just for one day.  I gained so much more confidence about myself.  I didn’t give it my all before I got here.  But now, I WILL give it my all.  ”
