Boil Water Notice Issued by City
BOIL WATER NOTIFICATION
CITY OF HEMPHILL
July 1, 2009 8:20 am
Due to conditions which have occurred recently in the water system, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the system to notify all customers to boil water prior to consumption.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source. When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, water system officials will notify you.
If you have questions regarding this matter you may contact Hemphill City hall at (409)787-2251.
Donald P. Iles City Manager
Donny Crowell Water Plant Supervisor
City Manager Don Iles explains the cause of the notice:
The
City had a contractor replacing plant piping at the Water Treatment Plant
yesterday. When they completed the piping upgrade and turned the pump to town
on, a 10" line carrying water to town came apart. The line was partially
dewatered before a repair could be made. When the line was repaired and put back
into service, the crud that was in the dewatered line ended up in the town
ground storage tank. City crews have drained the ground storage tank and are
filling it with finished water. Once the tank is full, the entire system will be
flushed and samples taken to ensure a safe water supply. Chlorine residuals and
town water pressure has been maintained throughout this entire episode. The boil
water notice is a precaution required by TCEQ due to high finished water
turbidity. |
