The
Eyes of God
By

“No man hath seen God at any time…” John 1:18
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8
“God
is a Spirit…” John 4:24
Thirty years ago, I got my first “good camera”. It was a Nikon FM 35
MM, and was a splendid little camera. I began taking pictures of most
everything but particularly enjoyed taking bird photos. My friend Wayne
McWhirter said he’d gone through that same “bird stage” when he got his
first camera. “You’ll start out with the birds”, he said, “but you’ll
get over it…it’s a stage most photographers go through”. But here I am…
30 years later… still happy in the “bird stage” of photography.
From early on, I learned that I couldn’t let them see my eyes when
photographing them. When I tried taking shots from the car window, the
birds always flew when they saw my eyes. Hunters say that most wildlife
species are frightened by human eye-contact. So I began using different
methods of concealing my eyes…hanging a piece of camouflage netting
in front of my face …and remembering to position my camera very slowly
in front of my eyes before taking the shot. I also learned that I
could approach them closer if I looked downward as I made my approach.
As
I thought about this today, I began remembering what the Bible says
about God’s eyes. Because of man’s inherent sinfulness and the fact
that God is spirit, he cannot look into the eyes of God. But even though
we can’t see Him now, the Bible says that one day we can. “Blessed are
the pure in heart”, Jesus said, “For they shall see God”. But the
requisite to seeing the Father is to be made like His Son when He comes
for His Church.
Only a perfect person can look into the eyes of a perfect God. Today,
Jesus alone meets this requirement. But one day we can meet the
requirements too … but not until we’ve seen His Son.
