Local Elections Set

Every local government body in Sabine and San Augustine counties, except for the City of Broaddus and the Sabine County Hospital District, will be conducting local elections on May 8.

Each entity has at least one contested race in the May 8 local elections.

In the Hemphill City Council race, James A. “Jamie” Westbrook has filed for Alderman, Place 5 to regain the seat he lost two years ago to incumbent Robert L. “Bob” Kustermann.  Westbrook had been appointed to fill an unexpired term after the resignation of Brenda Hargrove.  Place 4 incumbent Lee M. Dutton, Jr. is unopposed in for another term on the Hemphill Council.

Incumbent Hemphill Mayor Robert Hamilton has also filed for re-election and will face challenger Rhoda Berry for the city’s top job.’

All three incumbents on the Hemphill school board have filed for re-election with Lloyd Ford receiving a challenge from Deborah Halbert for Position 2.  Incumbents Stephen Crowell for Position 1 and Tom Beall for Position 3 will go into the next term unchallenged.

West Sabine ISD school board will have contested races in both positions up for election.  Place 3 incumbent Brenda J. Kilgore will face challenger Kenneth “Ken” Love Smith.  Place 4 incumbent Scott Hardy will face three challengers who have thrown their hats into the political ring.  Rayford Welch, Tommy Mason and Bobby Lacy have all filed to challenge for the position.

The Pineland City Council will see all three races contested in the election.  Incumbent T.A. “Tracy” Lane and Nat Willey will face off in the Place 5 contest, Sherrel Fears is challenging incumbent Ronnie Crowell for Place 1 and Place 3 incumbent Murray Kilgore will face challenger Janice Gilley.

The City of San Augustine will hold an election to determine the winner of City Council Place 3, which will see incumbent Joe Verhalen challenged by Mike Malone.  Incumbents Pamela Teel in Place 2 and Lucy McBride in Place 4 do not have challengers in the City Council race.

The Broaddus school board will conduct an election to determine the winner between Place 6 incumbent Doug Sowell and challenger Linda Rushing.  Position 2 incumbent Melinda Smith is unopposed in her bid for another term.

All three incumbents up for election to the Broaddus City Council positions will return for another term as none were challenged for the job.  Misty Williams, Donald Murray and Shirley Parker currently hold the at-large positions.
