The Sabine County Hospital District Board of Directors has scheduled two public hearings to gather public input to determine if they should initiate an application to construct a “shelter of last resort” for Sabine County.
The hearings have been scheduled for 5:30PM on March 22 and March 29 in the cafeteria of Sabine County Hospital.
Grant funding for the project is available through the Low/Moderate Income portion of the second round of Hurricane Ike Recovery funds.
The Board wants the public’s input about the facility, which would house only Sabine County residents in the event of an emergency. When not used as a shelter, the facility can be used as a meeting center for gatherings, meetings, receptions and other events.
The facility will not be used to shelter persons outside of Sabine County. It is anticipated the shelter will be used for special needs medical recipients and become necessary in the event a tornado or other weather event severely damages several homes, a chemical spill occurs or to serve as an evacuation site. The shelter will also serve as a Point of Distribution for emergency supplies.
Persons in attendance will be provided an opportunity to speak on the idea.
