Recount in San Augustine County Judge Race Saturday, Votes Canvassed

After canvassing the vote Thursday morning, the San Augustine County Judge’s race will be decided for good on Saturday after a re-count of the March 2 Democratic ballots is completed.  Incumbent San Augustine County Judge Randy Williams requested the recount after challenger Samye Johnson squeaked out a one-vote win, 1,199 to 1,198 in the Democratic Primary on March 2.  Since there were no Republican candidates for the position, the next County Judge will be declared after the recount tomorrow.

Persons appointed by San Augustine County Democratic Chairperson Margie Coffee and not affiliated with the party or hold elected office will conduct the recount.  The recount is closed to the public and the media.

According to Coffee, four teams consisting of three persons each will hand count every ballot cast in the Democratic Primary election.  Each candidate is allowed one representative per team and may be present personally to observe the process.
