The Retiree Builders

By Doug Fincher

My Pastorate (Calvary Baptist of San Augustine) recently had twelve retired builders construct a new Education Building for us.   These men were volunteers—they travel all over the country building churches and related buildings. Beneath their name tags is written:  “Working for the glory of God.” They all worked closely with Cleo Hines, our Buildings and Grounds Chairman.

We were all fascinated by the men’s diversity of talents and personalities.  Joe’s was from Florida, and has been retired 18 years; Leon, Art and Bob were all from the same church in Onalaska, a little town near Livingston.  As I watched Bob limp from his childhood foot injury, I remembered God’s word, “the lame shall take the prey”. Lewis was a retired contractor and is their senior worker---(88 years old!!) Frank’s from Houston and did the electrical work. Art ate specially toasted bread every day and drank from a half gallon water jug.  “I’ve lost 32 pounds since January’”, he mused, “And have another thirty to go”.

It was almost mesmerizing to watch how well these men worked together and how precisely they did their work.  Most men their age have thrown in the towel, but these men keep going.  A lot of people wonder both how and why they spend their latter years working for nothing.  When I asked one of them about this one day, he smiled:

“Oh, nobody who works for the Lord works for nothing!”
