Twin Lakes to Host Alzheimer’s Support Group March 24

According to the key facts about Alzheimer’s disease on their website, www.alz.org, “Alzheimer’s disease mortality is on the rise, with a rapidly aging baby boomer population, Alzheimer’s disease will continue to impact more lives.  The disease currently impacts over 5 million Americans, with African-Americans and Hispanic’s at higher risk than whites.  From 2000 to 2006, Alzheimer’s disease deaths increased 46.1%, while other selected causes of death decreased.”

The report states “The scientists have not yet identified any single reason why brain cells fail.  There are certain risk factors which cannot be changed, increasing age being the greatest known risk factor, along with family history and heredity.  Scientists have so far identified one Alzheimer risk gene called Apolipoprotein E-e4, but state there may be as many as a dozen other Alzheimer risk genes in addition to APOE-e4.  Health professionals do not currently recommend routine genetic testing for APOE-e4.

The article states those risk factors which we might be able to influence include avoiding head injury, preventing conditions that damage the heart of blood vessels, related to the heart-head connection for adequate blood supply, and maintaining a good general health aging plan.

Maintaining normal weight, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, staying socially connected and exercising both your body and your mind are all excellent ways to add protection from the disease, according to the website’s facts and figures section.

Twin Lakes Rehabilitation and Care Center will hold their monthly Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting on March 24 at 10:00AM.

The public is invited so please mark your calendars to attend the support group meeting and learn more about this fast growing disease.
