Hospital District Considers Tax Rate, Funds Medical First Responders

The Sabine County Hospital District Board of Directors in a Public Hearing on Monday discussed the 2010 preliminary budget prior to discussion of the 2009 tax rate.

While no action was taken, discussion centered on leaving the tax rate at $0.19454 per $100 of valuation, or reducing it to the effective tax rate of $0.19012.

By using the effective tax rate the District would receive the same amount of revenue in 2009 as it received in 2008, even though the property valuations increased by $14 million.

The next public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate is set for Friday, September 4 at 5:30PM in the District’s boardroom at the Hospital.

A date for final adoption of the rate has not been set.

Continuing the funding begun last year, the Sabine County Hospital District voted in a Special Session following the Public Hearing, to allocate $12,000 in Medical First Responder funding for the first half of 2009.

Medical First Responders are trained volunteers that are first on the scene of a medical emergency in Sabine County and are associated with five of the Volunteer Fire Departments in the county.

In 2008, the volunteers completed 903 Medical First Responder responses.

Allocating the fund in a Special Session after the Public Hearing on Monday, the Medical First Responder Organizations will receive funds based on the percentage of overall responses completed during the first half of 2009.

Receiving funds were Pineland VFD $4080, Pendleton Harbor VFD $3,360, Fairmount VFD $1680, Shamrock Shores VFD $1,560 and Six Mile VFD $1,320.
