Man Hunt in Broaddus Ends in Arrest

An Angelina County traffic stop resulted in a huge manhunt early Saturday morning and centered around Broaddus.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, 25-year-old Brandon Temple, who has a Woodville TX address, was pulled over on Highway 147 east of Zavalla by an Angelina County Deputy for speeding.

A local Game Warden happened to be in the area and arrived on the scene for backup, just in case it was needed.

Shortly, both officers would find themselves in a high-speed chase and their lives threatened as Temple attempted to hit the officers’ vehicles head-on.

When the Deputy ran Temple’s drivers license, it came back as suspended.

Instead of getting out of the car as the Deputy instructed, Temple floored the gas and took off across the Highway 147 bridge into San Augustine County.

As the Deputy and Warden pursued Temple across the bridge, Temple suddenly made a U-turn and headed straight toward the Deputy and then the Warden, who narrowly missed a head-on collision.

When Temple got on the Angelina County side of the bridge, he abruptly reversed direction again, driving back into San Augustine County, eventually turning onto FS Road 363.

The Deputy and Warden were just far enough behind the fleeing Temple that when they caught up with the parked sports car at the dead end, they could not be certain if Temple was still in the vehicle.

Officers called for backup and proceeded cautiously after a further check on Temple showed that he had been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer in 1991 when he attempted to run over a Constable in Zavalla.

Dozens of law enforcement officials from several agencies descended on the scene, along with tracker dogs from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Woodville and the Jasper Police Department.

The manhunt was conducted by the San Augustine Sheriff’s Department, Angelina Sheriff’s Department, Zavalla Constables, Sabine County Sheriff’s Department, Game Wardens from all over the area, the Texas Department of Public Safety, TDCJ, numerous city police officers and the Broaddus Volunteer Fire Department.

According to San Augustine Sheriff David Smith, evidence indicates that Temple made his way through the woods and back to Highway 147 around 2:30AM, where an unidentified white female in a red pickup truck picked him up.

At some point, Temple became the driver of the truck.

A local Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission Agent stopped the truck just over the bridge in Angelina County.

The Agent believed the driver fit the description of Temple and detained him and the female passenger.

The Deputy who originally stopped Temple was summoned to the scene and positively identified Temple who was then arrested and charged with evading arrest, aggravated assault on a public servant and driving with an invalid license.

Temple remains in the Angelina County jail.
