One Killed in Police Pursuit

A 19-year-old San Augustine man was killed early Tuesday morning when the Chevrolet Tahoe in which he was riding, failed to negotiate a curve during a police pursuit.

At approximately 12:30AM, San Augustine police witnessed the Tahoe turn off Martin Luther King Blvd onto Highway 96 in rapid acceleration.

The officers began pursuing the vehicle and followed the Tahoe as it turned right onto FM 1277 westbound.

According to information received, the officers were able to keep the taillights of the Tahoe in sight until they reached a curve approximately one mile outside of the city limits.

Slowing to safely negotiate the curve, the officers found the vehicle driven by Lorenza White age 22, had left the roadway and struck a tree.

Killed in the accident was Yarvidie Clark, age 19 of San Augustine, who was a passenger in the back seat.

Front seat passenger Curmanius Kelly, age 18, received serious injuries as did White.

White has been charged with evading arrest or detention and driving while his license was suspended.

Additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation by the Department of Public Safety.

Clark was taken to Garner & Son Mortuary in San Augustine.
