S.A. Commissioners See Small Crowd at Tax Hearing

The San Augustine County Commissioners held a public hearing on the proposed 2010 budget and 2009-tax rate Tuesday morning and were met with only a handful of taxpayers in attendance.

Four taxpayers were at the meeting and asked some minor questions about the budget and the tax rate, with one participant requesting clarification of the recently published tax notice.

According to County Treasurer Pam Smith, the Commissioners are proposing a $3,301,075 budget for 2010, which is a $477,498 increase over the $2,823,577 2009 budget.

The tax rate will drop from $0.68101 per $100 valuation for last year to $0.61407 for 2009.

The Effective Tax Rate, which is the rate at which the same amount of tax revenue would be generated as last year, is $0.50532.  The proposed rate for 2009 is an 8% increase over the effective tax rate, or the $0.61407 that is being considered.

County Tax Assessor Collector Regina Barthol said the county property valuations have increased by $106.7 million from 2008, moving from that year’s value of $266,709,398 to a value in 2009 of $373,417,655.

Barthol attributes the huge 40% jump in valuations to the oil and gas activity in the county.

The next public hearing on the county’s budget and tax rate will take place at 9:00AM on Tuesday, September 8 in the Commissioners Courtroom, located in the old Shelby Savings Bank building on the corner of Harrison and Columbia Streets.

The Commissioners will meet again on September 15 at 9:00AM to formally adopt a budget and set the tax rate.
