OBITUARIES

Thomas Wayne Pickett
1952 - 2010
 
Mr. Thomas Wayne Pickett, age 57, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away suddenly Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in Florida.

Mr. Pickett was born Aug. 23, 1952. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
 
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Pickett.
 
Survivors: his wife, Karen Pickett of Rockwall, Texas; and his parents, Archie and Robbie Pickett of Many, Louisiana.

Funeral services have been set for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 11, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas, with John Stewart of Calvary Chapel in Garland, Texas, and Richard Hooton of First Methodist Church of Zwolle, Louisiana, officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at Fairview Cemetery, located off Hwy. 21 east of Nacogdoches, Texas.

Sue Collins

1936 - 2010

 

 

On March 9, 2010, Sue Johnson Collins, 73 passed away at her home after a lengthy illness.

 

She was born in Elizabeth, Louisiana, on December 26, 2936. She was a 1955 Graduate of Buna High School and resided in Newton since 1963.

 

Sue was active and a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, Tx. Her passion for reading was instrumental in organizing the Newton County Library, serving as an officer or a board member for a total of 37 years. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality, unconditional support for the community and her love for life.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Odelia and William Johnson.

 

She is survived by Sam Forse Collins, her loving husband of 46 years and three daughters, Sherri Weeks, husband Jeff of Plano, TX, Kay Jones of Newton, Tx, Kristi Staley, husband Buddy of Newton, Tx; and siblings, Billy Johnson, wife Betty of Many, LA, Bennie Johnson, wife, Betty of Orange, TX and sister, Thelma Condra, husband A.O. Condra of Brazoria, Tx, 6 grandchildren, Cody Jones and wife LaDonna, Addison and Hope Staley of Newton, TX, Laci, Nicole and Sam Weeks of Plano, TX as well as many wonderful friends and relatives.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 308 High Street, Newton, TX 75966, with burial to follow at the Newton City Cemetery.

 

Visitation wil be held on Wednesday, March 10, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home, located at the corner of Court and Houston Streets, Newton, Tx.

Syble Halbert Russell
(June 16, 1915 - March 8, 2010)
 
Syble Halbert Russell, age 94, died March 8, 2010, in Houston. Syble loved children and was a devoted elementary school teacher for 43 years.

Survivors include sons Jerry and wife Linda; Randy and wife Chrisha; grandchildren Kevin and wife Shelley, Tyler, and Brooke; and great-granddaughter Chloe. Syble is also survived by two loving sisters Mary Love and Bettye Rhoden; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Clyde and Betty Halbert of Milam, TX; husband of 49 years Curtis; brothers Burnett Halbert and A.B. Halbert; sisters Signa Maxey and Mildred Freeman.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 11th, from 12 – 2 PM at Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, TX, with graveside service at 2:30 at Joel Halbert Cemetery in Milam. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, March 13th, beginning at 10:30 AM at Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood, Houston, 77036. Contributions and remembrances sent to the charity of your choice, or to Syble’s favorite: Clarewood House, would be deeply appreciated by her family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Clarewood House, Life’s Solutions Hospice, and especially Rev. Thomas Hill for helping Syble transition into the presence of her Savior.

 

J. T. Sowell

1930 - 2010

 

J.T. Sowell, age 80, was born to George Washington Sowell and Anna Bell Wise Sowell, February 12, 1930 in Monroe, La. He entered into rest March 7, 2010 in San Augustine, Texas.

 

J.T. was a retired welder and U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Broaddus Masonic Lodge # 1112 and a member of Macune Missionary Baptist Church.

 

He is survived by his daughter Sharla Sowell of Leesville, La., numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Services are Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 2:00 P.M, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Burl McBride III officiating and burial in Macune Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard White, Frank Simmons, Ronald Norwood, Harlon Norwood and Dorsey Harvey. Honorary pallbearer is Jerry Lynn Birdwell.

 

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.
